Fenqihu

Fenqihu, the midway point on the Alishan Mountain Railway is known as the Jiufen of Central Taiwan. It has been known for many years for its old street, lunch boxes and square bamboo. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and with the ground low and flat, it looks like a bamboo dust pan fen qi and, when embraced by mist and cloud, it looks like a lake hu, so it was called Fenqihu (different characters to the name today) in earlier times.

This was where the old steam trains changed locomotive and the crew took a rest. Today diesel locomotives are used but the trains still stop for a while so passengers can stretch their legs and buy food or pay a visit to the nearby market.Fenqihu’s buildings are built up the slope. Below the station there is an old street about 500 meters long on which there are many shops selling special products, such as the local lunchboxes, tofu, cakes and other tasty foods. The old street is the highest old street in Taiwan and attracts many visitors. Fenqihu was settled before the railway was built over 100 years ago so the “old street” label is well deserved.
