Chukou is the gateway to the Alishan Highway and is the closest lowland settlement to Alishan and is where special produce from Alishan and goods from the lowlands were traded in the past, creating a busy market.

In terms of natural landscape Chukou is surrounded by mountains of the Alishan Mountain range on three sides and Bazhang River, flowing south to this point, turns west here. With the meander and suspension bridges it is a well-known scenic spot.

In the last few years, with more people travelling domestically, the Alishan National Scenic Area Administration, convenience stores and many other stores have been established here and, as well as the two suspension bridge, new scenic spots have been developed, once again making Chukou a popular tourist destination.
