Covering a distance of 3.3 kilometers, Zhukengxi Trail is along Zhukengxi river valley. In the old days, local residents carried loads of charcoal down the mountain on this “Charcoal Ancient Trail” to exchange for daily supplies. The difference in altitude on each end of the trail is up to 375 meters. Travelling from the higher altitude on the west side is quite easy in the beginning, until a quick sharp turn down to the fir forest and you’ll feel the steepness. However, this part is not bad until you come to a viewing pavilion and public toilet next to the intersection of Industrial Road. Take a short break and the trail of Zhukengxi valley unfolds.竹坑溪步道橫跨生毛樹溪
Following the trail downward there are wild violet peonies along the trail. Once you arrive to the upstream valley around Number 1 Bridge, the scenery suddenly changes to a colorful rainforest with creeks and mysterious hideouts. Walk along the creek and listen to the gurgling sounds of water, songs of birds in the bushes. Take notice of ferns, vines and prolific ficus trees that display their vigorous vitality. The diverse scenery in this area includes many bridges, canyons, cliffs and fountains. Between Number 2 and 4 Bridges, follow the trail downward along the cliff, and avoid the occasional giant rocks that protrude from the ground. Once you pass Number 4 Bridge, you will come to a diversified terrain with “hairy trees”, and Longgong and Leiyin Waterfalls. Because Longgong and Leiyin Waterfalls are tributaries of Zhukengxi and the water flows from hard rock plates, the tributary is higher than the main stream, forming what’s known as “Hanging Valley Waterfall”. After the rainy season or a heavy rain, the majestic waterfall is breathtaking.

Continuing down the river valley to the section between Number 5 and 6 Bridges is a long wooden trail. Right before you approach Number 7 Bridge, there’s a section of mixed dirt step trail. Be careful of a few spots with protruding big rocks. Otherwise, this section has the most natural and unique rock formation landscape. Next is Number 10 Bridge in front of Leiyin Waterfall, where you can enjoy refreshing air. From hereafter the trail is an upward slope. Besides a few challenging spots that require special attention, there is no more big ups and downs on the trail. Pass Number 11 and 12 Bridges and a few turns, you will arrive to a pavilion, public toilet and a store. You can buy a cup of coffee and sample some local agricultural specialty snacks. Back on the trail and pass some vegetable gardens and tea fields, and you will arrive to the parking lot at the west entrance/exit.  雷音瀑布與十號橋
