◼️Entrance/Exit-B Ruili-bound County Highway 166 – 78.7 Kilometers Point, GPS: 23°32'03.0"N 120°39'25.1"E
The 2.5-kilometer-long Youth Ridge Trail was a trail where residents in Ruili and Taihe came to exchange goods in the old days. The entrance/exit on opposite ends are near Yuantan Visitor Center and next to Ruili Elementary School on County Highway 166. The zig-zag-shaped trail has a higher altitude on the Ruili side, and is progressively lower after passing the two Land God Temples. Along the way, there are bamboos and towering giant trees surrounding a steep section in the old forest. After passing the section along the creek, you’ll reach Bat Cave and Swallow Cliff. Then from Qingren Suspension Bridge, the turning point of the trail, head to Yuantan. The section from Zhukeng river valley up to Ruili has very steep slopes, with more than 300 meters difference in altitude. In the old days, folks who could easily hike up to the top with a heavy load on their shoulder were praised as having a young and strong body, hence, the name “Youth Ridge”.
When you descend to the north shore of Zhukengxi, there is an unnoticeable tree hole along the river. Ruili residents took wild honey from here in the old days, which demonstrates their wisdom by using ingredients nature offered. Located in the mid section of the trail are Bat Cave and Swallow Cliff, sharing an adjacent rock wall about 230 meters long. The lower part of the rock wall is concaved due to river erosion. The 40-meter-wide Swallow Cliff is an uneven surface created by parallel layers of a combination of sandstone and shale. The surface of Bat Cave has holes of various sizes like a honeycomb. Both are rare geographic landscape.
Qingren Suspension Bridge across the valley exactly fits 2 people walking side by side, so many couples like to spend time here to enjoy the views of Bat Cave, Swallow Cliff and the cliffs and majestic peaks on either side of the river valley. The path between Qingren Suspension Bridge and Yuantan is a gentle slope. After passing a section of the forest along the river and a dense bamboo forest, Yuantan is not too far ahead. In addition, through the Yuantan-Yuntan-Youth Ridge Trails, you can reach Yuantan Eco Park or Yuantan Trail. These destinations make your trip more diverse and interesting.
