步道簡介
At the 47.4 kilometers point on Provincial Highway 18 is a large parking lot, and across the parking lot is Tufei (Bandit) Market. The entrance to Longmei Trail is on the right of the market’s entrance. This trail runs in a big circle and is a gentle slope for the most part, except for the relatively steep uphill steps made of wood planks. The wooden steps are built along the mountain terrain, and provide an easy hike. There are also benches and other facility along the trail for resting. Tung tree, Camphor, Milk tree and Taiwan Cypress are some of the trees that make up the flora in the mountain. As you wander, notice the endless songs of cicadas that provide nature’s music and sound effect. Deep in the forest, there are also squirrels and Formosan rock-monkeys.
Tung tree flowers bloom in March and April, and they are beautiful on the branches as well as on the April snow-covered-ground, adding an air of romance to the atmosphere. Once you passed the round plaza at the turning point and the Tufeishan archway, you’ll see a quaint stone path made of blocks of rocks and cobblestones. At the top of the path is a brand new recreation square. The design of the square combines local environmental characteristics, culture and other elements. The recreation square not only gives visitors a sense of the unique local custom, and the surrounding natural ecology and scenery, but it also serves as a great resource for outdoor teaching. As you follow the stone steps down the path and come to a fork, you can choose to return to the circular starting point or continue straight ahead to the end of the path.
When you return to Tufei Market you can take a break and regain your strength. During business hours, there are lots of local special agricultural products and snacks you can try. This is also the location for eco tours and local cultural craft activities.
In addition, Tufei Market was also where local residents once fought the Japanese courageously. The rebels defended themselves and attacked the Japanese. Their efforts created a lot of problems for the Japanese, who called them “Tufei” (bandits), and this area “Tufeishan” (Bandit Mountain). Nowadays, these heroic counter-Japanese actions are recognized as the local courageous spirit. Visitors can listen to villagers recount these stories and understand the local history after enjoying the scenery at Longmei Trail.
