The customs of a place reflect the rich and intricate details of the local lifestyle that are built over time, around the changes of season. To allow visitors to return to the heydays of the forestry industry and learn about the unique culture, nature, and history, "common life at Alishan" is taken as the concept and local places are linked to create scenarios of the old days at Fenqihu. Through these themed tours, visitors are invited to experience the old life at Fenqihu.
Follow the old forestry railway all the way up from Chiayi City along the mountain. When you arrive at Fenqihu, it is around noon time. Lumberjacks, farmers, and merchants used to dine here while the steam train was getting refills of water and coal. At this time, Fenqihu was full of people, and the continuous shouting of bento sellers can be heard loud and clear. Fenqihu bento therefore became a classic local delicacy.
Firefly-watching in winter at Fenqihu
Fenqihu is the best place to enjoy winter fireflies in Taiwan. It has Taiwan's unique winter firefly, Diaphanes lampyroides, which can be found sparkling in the winter forest from November to December every year. The Alishan firefly events kick off with the Fenqihu winter firefly. You are welcome to come meet these beautiful dancing fairies in the cold winter forest.
Lighting up Fenqihu
Through the careful arrangement of lanterns, the nostalgic atmosphere of how workers in the old days, after a long day of work, were ready to enjoy the nightlife is recreated, so that visitors can roam in the old streets and feel as if they have returned to the prosperous era in the early years of the Republic of China. At the themed photo corner of the exhibition square of Fenqihu Old Street, the concept of Alishan Forest Railway train is constructed with red and white lanterns, creating a distinct and nostalgic image of the mountain town and its railway.
Fenqihu Bento Festival
Fenqihu's renowned bentos are not to be missed. Every year, visitors are brought here just to taste them. Fenqihu Bento Festival offers eight local bentos in nostalgic Alishan train ticket themed boxes.
Tianmama Gudao Chef's Gourmet House also launched a limited edition "3-by-3 Bento" with handmade cherry blossom shaped Japanese sweets during the cherry blossom season.
At the 2022 Fenqihu Bento Festival, two fun competitions were held for the public. Fenqihu Bento Aesthetics Competition asks the contestants to use dishes made from local ingredients to create beautiful bentos. Fenqihu Bento Speed Eating Challenge invites participants to taste eight Fenqihu bentos within 30 minutes. The intense competition was broadcasted live online by influencers. Visitors enjoyed the liveliness of the mountain town.
