The highly anticipated firefly season of Alishan National Scenic Area starts in April. Every year at the end of Spring and the beginning of Summer, tens of thousands of fireflies gather here, making a magnificent sight. Alishan National Scenic Area Administration, Tourism Bureau, MOTC, collaborates with local communities to launch guided tours and events during the firefly season, including the “Tea party at night with the fireflies” on April 12 at Yuantan Creek Ecological Park. Combing the firefly ecology with tea setting, with talks by local tea and travel experts, local tourism and Alishan tea culture are promoted. At Yuantan Creek Ecological Park, firefly guided tours are available every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from April 13 to May 19. A “bounty hunter” event is held at Lijia tribe on April 13 to 14. Through Tsou tribal culture experiences and firefly guided tours, visitors can learn about the culture and ecology of Alishan. The “Tea with the fireflies – welcome to the party” event held at Gongxing Tufeishan Ecological Park every Saturday and Sunday between April 5 and May 4 is a special event where tea tasting and firefly watching can be done on a starry night surrounded by tung tree flowers. Guided by local experts, you can walk into the forest full of wonders. With the guidance, you will also learn about the history of Tufeishan in the romantic atmosphere. In addition, the romantic “Starry sky picnic” at Leye Tribe is held between April 10 and May 30 in accordance with the firefly season.

You are reminded to watch out for your own safety during firefly watching. Walk slowly to prevent any tripping and falling. Most importantly, please obey the four No’s—No loud noises, no firefly catching, no pointing of flashlight at fireflies (You can wrap it up with red cellophane to minimize the disturbance), no strong light (Do not use the flash when filming fireflies. Their mating will be seriously disturbed.) It is hoped that all visitors can enjoy watching the fireflies while preserving their habitat such that they can continue to thrive in the area.
