Mazhuhu is located in the central part of Gongxing Village. The low-lying terrain here makes it easy for mazhu (sweet bamboo) to grow, and since “hu” means “low-lying” in the Taiwanese dialect, hence the name “Mazhuhu”. Mazhu was once used to make paper and bamboo rafts, however, when the demand decreased, Makino bamboo, one of the important money making crop here, took over. About 49.7 kilometers on Provincial Highway 18, where the exit that turns into Chiayi County Road 131, you will come to a parking lot and an expansive viewing platform. After you have a chance to enjoy the rolling mountains ahead, then drive along Chiayi County Road 131 for about 50 meters, and you will arrive to the north entrance of Mazhuhu Trail.

The altitude of Mazhuhu Trail is between 1,050 – 1,150 meters. The starting point is at the junction of the wood steps and Industrial Road. The first half section of the trail is flat, while the second half of the section is a hiking trail that offers a nice view at the top. The first section is a forest with bamboo and other plants. A hike here allows you to understand the local industry and culture. The faux wood steps on the walkway are easy on your feet, and the stone benches along the trail provide a pleasant resting spot for hikers.

The last section of the trail is wood steps built along the slope of the hill. Since this section is not long, it’s not particularly difficult. As you climb up slowly, the view becomes more broad. When you reach the observation pavilion, your reward for this trip is the open, unobstructed view. If you want to see the view from the mountain ridge, then continue upward. The viewing platform at the highest point offers a 360-degree view of the area, like the mountain range and the traffic flow on the Alishan highway. The refreshing scenery at the summit will be the most beautiful image on this trip.
