The rock wall, 200 meters wide, of the bat cave is an extension of the upper part of Swallow Cliff.
The alternating layers of sandstone and shale are covered in holes like a honeycomb, the largest of which are 50cm wide and 60 deep. Bats used to live in the holes which is why “Bat cave” was so named.
