Alishan Forest Railway is a world-renowned mountain railway in Taiwan. Originally built for logging transport, it has transformed into an iconic forest sightseeing railway.
The Main Line of the Alishan Forest Railway spans 72.7 kilometers, connecting Chiayi City directly to Alishan. After severe damage caused by Typhoon Morakot in 2009 and Typhoon Typhoon Soudelor in 2015 forced a long-term closure, the railway underwent a meticulous 15-year restoration effort. Full-line operations officially resumed on July 6, 2024, allowing visitors to travel seamlessly by train from Chiayi Station all the way to Alishan Station. The line serves 13 main stations along the route, including Chiayi, Beimen, Zhuqi, Zhangnaoliao, Dulishan, Liyuanliao, Jiaoliping, Shuiliao, Fenqihu, Duolin, Shizilu, Erwanping, and Alishan. The entire journey takes approximately 4 hours and 56 minutes, which includes a 1-hour layover at Fenqihu Station for travelers to savor local delicacies and explore the historic Old Street.
Key Branch Lines and Scenic Routes in the Park:
• Zhushan Line: The first high-mountain railway built by Taiwan, specifically designed for visitors traveling to Zhushan (as well as Duogaoyue and Ogasawara Mountain) to watch the breathtaking sunrise and morning mist.
• Zhaoping Line: Connecting Alishan Station to Zhaoping Station, this line stretches approximately 1.3 kilometers with a travel time of 6 to 7 minutes. Passing through Zhaoping Park and the Taiwan Pleione Educational Park, it serves as the ideal route to the Sisters Ponds and local flower-viewing spots.
• Shenmu Line: Winding through dense, lush forests, this line takes passengers straight to the majestic Giant Tree Area and trail network, offering an essential forest bathing experience among ancient trees.
• Shuishan Line: Originally a logging branch line extending toward Dongpu, this 1.6-kilometer section starting from Zhaoping Station has been repurposed into a hiking trail. The path features historic rail relics and the 1,080-year-old Shuishan Giant Tree (Red Cypress), one of the largest trees in the park. The round-trip walk takes about 1 hour, making it ideal for families and casual walkers.
• Mianyue Line (Hiking Trail): Formerly a dedicated timber transportation line spanning roughly 9.2 kilometers, this route no longer has active train service but has become a popular hiking destination renowned for its unique bridges and tunnels. A one-way hike takes about 4 to 5 hours. (Note: Permits must be applied for in advance as the trail passes through the Taiwan Pleione Nature Reserve).
In addition, meticulously restored national-treasure steam locomotives—specifically Nos. 25, 26, and 31—make special appearances on designated themed tours and holiday trains. The Alishan Forest Railway is not only a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts, but also a living cultural asset that testifies to Taiwan's rich forestry heritage.
