Alishan Forest Railway is a world-renowned mountain railway. It was originally built for transporting logs and now has transformed into a heritage railway for forest tourism.

There are three branches. Zhushan Line was the first mountain railway built by Taiwanese people, now taking visitors to Zhushan for sunrise watching. Mianyue Line is for tourism purposes. There is beautiful scenery along the way and at the end of the line, there is the well known Shihou (Stone Monkey) Park (Currently closed and under maintenance for the damages caused by the 921 earthquake and Typhoon Morakot). Shenmu Line goes through the park to the Shenmu zone of giant old trees. The old steam engines No.25, 26, and 31, after careful maintenance and repair by experienced experts, are now in service again, taking tourists around the park as a functional exhibit.
