Introduction
The attractions surrounding Fenqihu North Trail are Fenqihu Trail, Japanese Shino Shrine, Menchai Kiln, and Maplewood Gorge, etc.
Fenqihu Trail: Hike along the trail next to the Fenqihu Agricultural Specialty Product Exhibition Center. It will take you to the observation deck where you can see the villages in Fenqihu, and it also connects to Cake Thief Trail. While you’re immersed in the temperate warm zone of the forest, enjoy the bamboo trees and check out the 3-meter square pedestal platform, stone steps and stonewall of the old Japanese Shino Shrine ruins, or the Menchai kiln ruins stacked with stones. The distance of this trail is about 2,000 meters, and it’s pleasant and cool in the spring and summer.
Japanese Shino Shrine: The Japanese Shino Shrine is located on the north side of the Fenqihu forest, where the Hinokami god was worshipped. Nowadays, only a 3-meter square pedestal platform, stone steps and stonewall ruins remain. Menchai Kiln: During the Japanese occupation, there were more than 10 Menchai kilns (wood burning kilns). Locals would put wood scraps in the kiln and let them burn for about 20 days to make charcoals for household use. The one that remains today is a round kiln made mainly with stacked stones, about 5 pings wide (1.5125 meters). The wall is about 1 meter high with a half meter wide opening. Maplewood Gorge: Maplewood Gorge is a spot to enjoy maples in Fenqihu. Besides Oliver Maples and Snake Bark Maples, you can also see the entire view of Fenqihu in the distance. Between the peaks of Guanglunshan and Pilishan, Dadongshan can be seen in the distance. When the weather is nice, the Yushan mountain range can also be seen.
