The attractions surrounding the Fenqihu Trail include the Japanese Shinto Shrine ruins, the Menchai Kiln, and Maplewood Gorge.
Fenqihu Trail Hike along the trail starting next to the Fenqihu Agricultural Specialty Product Exhibition Center. The pathway leads to an observation deck offering panoramic views of Fenqihu's villages, while also connecting to the Cake Thief Trail. As you immerse yourself in the temperate forest, enjoy the lush bamboo groves and discover historical landmarks along the way. The trail spans approximately 2,000 meters, offering a refreshingly cool retreat during spring and summer.
Japanese Shinto Shrine Ruins Located on the north side of the Fenqihu forest, this shrine was originally dedicated to the Shinto deity Hinokami during the Japanese colonial period. Today, only a 3-meter-square stone platform, stone steps, and ruined stonewalls remain.
Menchai Kiln During the Japanese occupation, more than ten charcoal kilns operated in this area. Local residents placed wood scraps inside the kilns, letting them smolder for about 20 days to produce household charcoal. The remaining structure is a round kiln built from stacked stones, covering an area of roughly 5 ping (16.5 square meters). Its stone wall stands about 1 meter high with a 0.5-meter-wide entrance.
Maplewood Gorge Maplewood Gorge is the premier spot for viewing autumn foliage in Fenqihu, home to Oliver Maples and Snakebark Maples. The site also offers sweeping distant views of the surrounding geography—including Dadongshan nestled between the peaks of Guanglunshan and Pilishan. On clear days, visitors can even spot the majestic Yushan (Jade Mountain) Main Peak in the distance.

Fenqihu Trail Entrance 1. National Freeway 3 to Zhongpu Interchange → Connect to Provincial Highway 18 → Travel for 64km to Shizhuo, turn left at County Road 169 to Fenqihu. 2. National Freeway 1 to Chiayi Interchange → Connect to County Road 159 → Take Provincial Highway 18 → Travel for 64km to Shizhuo and turn left on County Road 169 to Fenqihu. Fenqihu Trail Entrance is next to the Fenqihu Agricultural Specialty Product Exhibition Center, and across from the train station.

Fenqihu Trail Entrance Kuo-Kuang Bus: Board at Taipei West Station Building B, or Chiayi Station. Chiayi County Bus 7322, 7302: Board at Taiwan Railway Chiayi Station, HSR Chiayi Station. Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Alishan A & B line: Board at HSR Chiayi Station A line, or Taiwan Railway Chiayi Station B line. Alishan Little Train: Take the train at Chiayi Station. Get off at Fenqihu Station. The Fenqihu Trail entrance is opposite the train station, and next to the Fenqihu Agricultural Specialty Product Exhibition Center.
